El Niño arrow Level 5

Designing Your Own Investigation

You have used real data to begin to understand the phenomenon of El Niño, but there is still a lot you can learn from exploring this data. El Niño events last an average of 12 to 18 months and occur about once every two to seven years. Ten events happened in the last 42 years, with one of the most extreme occurring in 1997-98.

Using what you've learned, develop your own hypothesis about El Niño. Then see if you can get data to support or disprove it!
